TRD Quickshifter

How to Install TRD Quickshifter Toyota 86 Subaru BRZ Scion FRS

First step, make sure the transmission is in neutral, and get the car safely lifted in the air since the kit will be installed from under the car, not inside. If you have the option of a lift, it will make the install much easier, but it’s not required. Go ahead and jack up the front and rear of the car, placing a jack stand at each corner.

Once the car is lifted safely and you’re looking up at the underside, you’ll notice the factory setup above the driveshaft.

The next step would be to loosen the two 14mm bolts holding the drive shaft center support. This will free up more room to work with.

With the driveshaft dropped down a bit, it will provide a little more room to get at the shift linkage and shifter support bushing. Go ahead and carefully pull back the factory boot to reveal the retaining clip that is holding the shift linkage to the bottom of the shifter.

Using a needle nose pliers, go ahead and pull the retaining clip and washer from the end of the shift linkage. This will allow you to separate the linkage from the shifter. Be sure to save the washer and clip as they will be reinstalled later.

With the shift linkage separated from the shifter, you can remove the original boot. Then, grab the larger section of the replacement boot and work it over the bottom of the shifter.

At this point you’re ready to install the key component of the TRD Quickshifter. Push the boot back a bit to provide enough room for you to slide the adapter into position on the shifter. Be sure to place thread lock on the bolt, and using a 7mm hex, or allen head socket, torque the bolt to 7 ft lb. Please take your time on this step, numerous 86, FRS, BRZ owners have experienced this bolt coming loose after driving a while.

After the adapter is on and torqued to 7 ft lbs, slide the second half of the two piece boot over the shift linkage. Then you can slide the end of the linkage into the new adapter mounted on the bottom of the shifter. Once its in place, reinstall the washer and retaining clip.

We’re on the final stretch. The next step is to replace the shifter mount bushing assembly. Keep in mind, if you have already swapped the factory shifter mount bushing for an aftermarket option, you can skip this step if you like as it will work with the TRD Quickshifter adapter. To swap it if you need, simply remove the two 12mm bolts holding it to the chassis, then slide the factory bushing off of the shifter mount.

To complete the TRD Quickshifter install on your 86, BRZ, or FRS, slide the new shifter mount bushing onto the shifter mount and reinstall the two 12mm bolts to the chassis. Making sure the flat side of the bushing is against the face of the bracket ( not the clamp side ) tighten the two 10mm nuts to secure the clamp to the bracket. At this point the last step is to enclose the two sections of the dust boot by working the first rib of the smaller section into the larger section, locking them together.

Your TRD Quickshifter kit is in! Don’t forget to fasten your driveshaft center support back into place using the two 14mm bolts. Now get your car back on the ground and go for a drive. Enjoy!
